EV Two-Wheeler Sales Cross 1 Lakh Units in August
India’s electric two-wheeler market continued its strong momentum in August 2025, with total retail sales reaching 1,03,802 units, according to government data from the VAHAN portal. The latest figures highlight a reshuffling of market positions, as legacy manufacturers and startups battle for dominance in the country’s fast-growing EV sector.
TVS Motor Extends Market Leadership
TVS Motor Company maintained its leadership position in the EV two-wheeler space, selling 24,087 scooters in August. Riding on the growing popularity of its iQube range, the company registered a 37% year-on-year (YoY) growth, further consolidating its lead over rivals.
Ola Electric Overtakes Bajaj, Regains Second Spot
Ola Electric, despite facing cooling demand and heightened competition, overtook Bajaj Auto to reclaim the No. 2 spot in August. The Bengaluru-based startup sold 18,972 units, although sales were down 31% YoY.
Ola also announced a significant technological milestone with the integration of its 4680 battery cell into the S1 Pro Plus electric scooter and Roadster X Plus motorcycle. Deliveries of these upgraded models are scheduled to begin post-Navaratri.
In addition, Ola launched the S1 Pro Sport at ₹1,49,999, featuring a top speed of 152 kmph. Bookings opened in August, with deliveries set to start in January 2026.
Ather Energy Gains Momentum

The EV maker also unveiled its EL platform — a new vehicle architecture built on 26 lakh km of field data. Designed for versatility, scalability, and cost efficiency, EL promises faster assembly, lower costs, and advanced safety features, including electronic braking.
Ather also showcased its “Project Redux” moto-scooter concept, featuring a keyless start system and MorphUI interface, signaling its ambition to expand beyond conventional scooter formats.
Hero Surpasses Bajaj in EV Sales
In a major development, Hero MotoCorp overtook Bajaj Auto in EV sales for the first time. The company sold 13,313 electric scooters in August, representing a staggering 180% YoY growth, underscoring its aggressive push into the EV mobility market.
Bajaj Auto Loses Ground
Once seen as a formidable contender with its Chetak EV, Bajaj Auto slipped further behind rivals. The company sold 11,730 units in August, marking a 30% YoY decline, as its limited product portfolio struggles to keep pace with expanding offerings from competitors.
The Road Ahead: Festive Season to Boost Competition
With the festive season approaching and multiple product launches in the pipeline, competition in India’s electric scooter market is expected to intensify further. Established players like TVS and Hero are expanding their footprint, while Ola and Ather are pushing innovation to capture market share.
Industry experts believe that the coming months could see record-breaking EV sales, making the sector one of the most dynamic segments of India’s automotive industry.
